Why you may need a root canal

When your tooth has a crack, decay, or faulty dental work, infection can spread into the tooth’s center (pulp). The dental pulp contains all the sensitive tissues, including nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the pulp chamber has an infection, it can become excruciating, requiring a root canal (endodontic treatment).

The other symptoms of a root canal include:

  • A darkening tooth
  • Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold drinks
  • Gingival swelling
  • A recurring pimple-like bump on the gums

If you have an infected tooth, the earlier you seek treatment, the better. While a root canal can save badly damaged teeth, it only works within a specific timeframe. Delaying treatment allows the infection to spread deeper into the tooth and surrounding tissues, leaving extraction the only viable treatment.

What to expect during root canal treatment

Unlike what you may have heard about root canals, this treatment is safe and painless. We administer root canals after numbing your mouth with a local anesthetic. However, you can consider sedation dentistry for added comfort if you have dental fears.

Once you are comfortable, we isolate the infected tooth and create a small access hole at the top of the tooth. Using this hole, the dentist removes the infected tissues and thoroughly cleans and sanitizes the area until all the infection is gone.

After cleaning, we seal the empty chamber and root canals with a rubber-like material (gutta-percha). The last step is to strengthen your treated tooth with a filling, although a crown will be used if your tooth is severely weakened.

After a root canal, we’ll give you aftercare instructions for a smooth recovery. Typically, we’ll prescribe antibiotics to ensure we eliminate any lingering infection. We’ll also recommend painkillers and home remedies to minimize pain, swelling, and other discomforts during healing.

Root Canal

Root canal therapy is a very common procedure. It has a reputation of being undesirable and painful. But when done properly it is actually painless. Every tooth in your mouth is composed of a crown and a root. When a cavity or bacteria penetrates the tooth, the root and its nerves become irritated. As a result, the bacteria within the pulp cavity needs to be removed and cleaned in order to restore the tooth to its healthy state. Following the procedure, the tooth is fragile and consequently is restored with the natural crown for a lifetime of durability. Root canals have a success rate of 95% or greater. Most root canal are diagnosed by patients’ sensitivities to a specific tooth. Be sure to consult your dentist any symptoms or discomfort occur.
